Continuamos avanzando con las velas. El viento soplaba débilmente y nosotros avanzábamos despacio, enseguida alcanzamos un sendereo trazado con huellas de moto nieve. Era evidente que los habitantes de Ny Alesund se acercaban hasta el frente glaciar en moto, por lo tanto estas huellas nos llevarían directamente hasta el pueblo.
El sendero zigzagueaba continuamente esquivando los resaltes del camino e íbamos constantemente pegados a la orilla congelada. El viento, que soplaba con la intensidad justa, nos permitía realizar todos los giros y quiebros necesarios sobre la nieve. Parecíamos coches de Scalextric siguiendo el recorrido perfectamente trazado bajo nuestros esquís. No recuerdo cuanto tiempo exactamente pasamos en esa situación pero el ambiente de esos últimos kilómetros era realmente mágico. Dos cometas de mil colores dibujadas sobre la nieve y recortadas sobre la luz plateada del Ártico, avanzando a ritmo suave pero sin detenerse. En un momento dado el viento se aceleró. Nos dirigíamos cogiendo velocidad hacia un cabo donde el paso era realmente estrecho. Pasamos a gran velocidad entre el agua y el promontorio rocoso y las vistas se abrieron frente a nosotros. La banquisa desaparecía y por primera vez pudimos observar el mar desde cerca con sus aguas liberadas. Recuerdo que me sorprendió el suave ondular de sus ondas al viento. Una gran bahía de aguas abiertas se extendía frente a nosotros. Al fondo de ella pudimos vislumbrar los edificios de Ny Alesund y algo parecido a una chimenea de grandes dimensiones. Inconscientemente lancé un grito de alegría mientras el viento crecía en intensidad. Íbamos realmente rápido y una sensación de felicidad pura explotó dentro de mí. Fui plenamente consciente de que lo habríamos logrado. Veinticuatro horas antes pensábamos que nuestra llegada tendría lugar en tres o cuatro días y ahora, de golpe, nos encontrábamos a las puertas de nuestro destino. Los meses de entrenamiento y toda la planificación de la expedición pasaron por mi cabeza a gran velocidad. Al fondo de la bahía siguiendo el rumbo que nos habíamos marcado surgía una pequeña construcción de madera de color oscuro. A toda velocidad nos dirigimos hacia lo que resultó ser una extraña cabaña abierta. En las puertas de la misma tumbamos nuestras velas y pusimos fin a la jornada. La cabaña resultó ser un antiguo vagón de tren alemán. Tenía una estufa de leña con cantidad de troncos perfectamente serrados y cortados al lado, cocina, cuatro camas y una mesa con un quinqué y velas. Habíamos recorrido casi cuarenta kilómetros en unas catorce horas y estábamos a punto de terminar nuestra travesía. Para no llegar tan pronto a la base internacional científica de Ny Alesund y no tener que esperar ahí a nuestro vuelo, decidimos darnos el día siguiente libre y descansar en tan acogedora cabaña. Sin duda fue la noche más feliz de nuestro viaje, la etapa había resultado impresionante y había tenido mucha emoción. Ahora descansábamos al calor de una antigua salamandra de hierro puro en nuestros secos y cómodos sacos.
Ny Alesund es uno de esos sitios de leyenda. Pese a tener pocos años de vida (alrededor de un siglo) y nunca haber contado con muchos habitantes ha tenido una vida intensa y cargada de historia. El origen de este pueblo es minero y su puerto y sus aguas eran fondeadero habitual de las flotas foqueras. Con la decadencia de las minas consecuencia de una serie de desastres y accidentes en ellas, la compañía minera de King´s Bay decide reconvertirse y fundar una especie de base científica internacional. Ahora mismo no hay habitantes en Ny Alesund que no sean científicos o personas dedicadas a la logística de las diferentes bases. Los edificios, antes morada de pescadores y mineros, son ahora la residencia de los diferentes países vinculados al programa científico del Ártico. Son pequeñas bases en las cuales sus investigadores sólo duermen y realizan sus experimentos en los laboratorios. El desayuno, comida y cena así como el bar de los sábados y el centro de logística se desarrolla en un moderno edificio sede de los servicios de la compañía King´s Bay.
