Con los pies dentro de una palangana de agua caliente me siento a escribir de nuevo en este blog que tengo un poco abandonado en las últimas semanas. La vuelta a la vida normal y a las comodidades siempre es fácil, con los tiempos que corren resulta increíble lo rápido que se puede pasar de una situación extrema a una placentera.
En medio de la ventisca de un día hace unas dos semanas, llamábamos al servicio de rescate de Longyarbien. Llevábamos 17 jornadas en el hielo luchando cada día para ganar unos míseros kilómetros, todas nuestras raciones de comida nos resultaban insuficientes y al acostarme me dormía pensado en grandes comilonas y desayunos. Tenía algún dedo del color de un grillo y la paranoia constante de osos rondando por los alrededores de la tienda. Por estas y otras razones esperábamos la llegada del helicóptero en lo alto del plateau abrigados con toda nuestra ropa y dentro de la tienda a medio desmontar. En ese momento escuchamos un rotor en la lejanía y el cielo se abrió.
Tres noruegos grandes como ascensores y con sonrisas de oreja a oreja nos ayudaron a subir todo el material al vehículo. Luego nos dispusieron en el interior con una manta sobre las piernas como si fuésemos ancianos en silla de ruedas. EL ruido de los motores anuló cualquier tipo de comunicación y todos nos abstrajimos en nuestros pensamientos.
Por la ventana se podía ver como volábamos a la altura de los picos más altos de la isla, por primera vez en mucho tiempo disfrutábamos de la claridad del cielo y de la luz del sol. En seguida el paisaje montañoso se terminó y sobrevolamos kilómetros y kilómetros de banquisa. Cuarenta minutos después aterrizábamos en el aeropuerto desde donde una furgoneta nos llevó al hospital.
El chequeo duró menos de veinte minutos. En ellos un señor mayor con los ojos claros y vidriosos por ser mayor y por ser noruego me escrutó en el silencio más absoluto. Después de darme unas indicaciones que fui incapaz de comprender pero que me tranquilizaron por el tono de sus palabras nos marchamos en un gran taxi furgoneta en dirección al bar más cercano, y además el único.
Las situaciones cambian a una velocidad increíble: A las seis y media de la tarde de ese día José encendía el teléfono satélite para solicitar una evacuación a casi 80º de latitud norte. A las nueve se nos caía la baba delante de dos hamburguesas igual de grandes que los rescatadores, estábamos sentados en la barra de un bar decorado al más puro estilo trampero y bebíamos jarras de cerveza mientras comentábamos las jugadas más interesante del viaje.
Hoy, sumergido en la primavera madrileña y en un baño de agua con yodo para restablecer mis dedos lesionados, escribo sobre lo pasado con recuerdos llenos de cariño y buen humor. Es increíble lo rápido que cambian las situaciones…
