Las obras de remodelación en la base avanzan a mejor ritmo del que pensábamos. El paisaje escrupulosamente cuidado, desde los orígenes de su fundación, se encuentra ahora muy modificado. Esta remodelación no pretende, como su nombre indica, remodelar la actual base sino construir una nueva. Una serie de nuevos módulos con más capacidad, más modernos y que supongan menos mantenimiento se están levantando en el actual asentamiento. Para ello la población habitual en Bahía Sur se ha doblado. Convivimos técnicos de la base con operarios chilenos. A parte de ello un barco containero fondea frente a la base y se encarga de bajar a tierra el material necesario para las obras. Se ha tenido que doblar los turnos de desayuno, comida y cena. Los proyectos científicos han debido de ser reducidos al máximo pues la capacidad de la base con las obras no admite tanta gente. El trabajo en el glaciar, que es el que más realizamos los técnicos de montaña, está prácticamente parado. Excepto algunas mediciones, apenas pisamos el hielo estos días. Por el contrario la base es un hervidero de gente yendo de un lado a otro. La nueva base poseerá una estructura casi espacial, diseñada por los mismos arquitectos de la base Halley, tiene un aspecto futurista. El módulo de habitabilidad, donde vivimos y comemos, tiene la forma de una estrella de tres puntas y está, al igual que el resto de las estructuras elevado del suelo. Como si de un palafito se tratase permanece elevado en previsión de futuras nevadas y de manera que quede aislado del suelo. Para ello se asientan los edificios sobre una especie de patas unidas al suelo mediante zapatas de hormigón. La nueva base será mucho más grande, cómoda y funcional. Esperemos que también, al menos, igual de acogedora.
Como en el resto de las bases los diferentes edificios están dispersos y no deben tener contacto unos con otros. De esta manera se prevé que un incendio no se expanda por las diferentes estructuras. En caso de desastre total y que toda la base sucumba bajo el fuego, el módulo más alejado y apartado, el de náutica, alberga sacos de dormir y material de supervivencia para todo el personal. Este módulo recibe, y seguramente seguirá recibiendo, tras las obras, el nombre de “la catedral”.
Las obras de remodelación comenzaron la pasada Navidad. Desde hace muchos años se hablaba de este momento sin que nadie supiese muy bien si alguna vez se concretaría el plan o no. Primero llegaron los arquitectos y el jefe de obra, luego un gran barco comenzó a bajar a tierra chilenos uniformados, toneladas de material y maquinaria. Numerosos contenedores construyeron una especia de poblado provisional para los trabajadores, con baños, enfermería y sala de pingpong. Ahora las obras van a buen ritmo. Una vez hechos gran parte de los agujeros para instalar las zapatas el trabajo se convierte en más agradecido y lo resultados más aparentes. Las estructuras se levantan y se inicia a atisbar el aspecto de la futura construcción.
La zona, como he dicho, está más concurrida. Entre el ir y venir de los obreros con su maquinaria, aparecen todos los días pequeños grupos de enormes eslavos blancos como un vaso de leche.
