Analisis del Viaje: Fotos
ntentaré explicar un poco cómo ha sido este viaje en Svalbard. Creo que ya han pasado los dias de rigor como para poder analizar con calma los hechos.
La isla de Spitzbergen es la mayor de un archipielago Noruego llamado Svalbard, situado entre los 76º y 80º Norte. Un isla preciosa y salvaje con casi 600 km de N-S y que ha sido recorrida en contadas ocasiones (4 creo) y siempre con avituallamiento y perros.Los perros se han usado para ayudar a tirar de las pulkas y hacen una gran labor protegiendo el campamento de los osos polares.

Hilo y yo pensábamos que sería posible efectuar ese recorrido sin avituallamientos ni perros.
Aqui cometimos el primer gran error. No es una travesia polar al uso puesto que transcurre por diferentes zonas: glaciares, mar congelado, montañas y mesetas a 1200 mts de altura. En consecuencia, se ha de salvar mucho desnivel,pasando de un lugar a otro.
Posiblemente nuestra idea pueda llevarse a cabo, pero nosotros nos dimos cuenta muy rápido que no seriamos nosotros, al menos de momento.
Yo recorrí el casquete polar Groenlandés E-O (600 km Kangerlosuaq-cercanias de Isertoq) avanzando a 23 km de media, el Parque Nacional de Sarek en Suecia con Hilo a ritmo de mas de 30 km diarios y juntos también el Campo de Hielo Norte en 26 dias N-S, en autonomia y acarreando 30 dias de comida y combustible.Con José M.Naranjo crucé el Báltico por el paralelo 65º (de Suecia a Finlandia) en sólo 10 dias.Cualquier travesia polar en la que me he aventurado lo normal era hacer 20-25 km diarios y en Groenlandia llegamos a hacer más de 40 km. Y nunca hasta hoy usé velas o cometas, sólo esquí.En todas esas travesias había un factor que no teníamos ahora en Svalbard: FRIO EXTREMO, asi con mayusculas, frio del que te congela en minutos.
Nos resultaba imposible avanzar 20 km al dia y a eso se unían los osos polares, preparar la cerca cada noche y dormir medio en vela.
Para avanzar por el plateau glaciar contábamos con velas de tracción porque el viento sopla generalmente N-S. Pues contra todo pronóstico durante estos dias vino siempre del S, de donde donde vienen las tormentas y el mal tiempo. Eso significaba que no podíamos usar las velas,con las que hubieramos recorrido 50 km en cuestion de horas.
En vez de eso tuvimos que soportar viento en contra cada dia.
Cuando entendimos que las cosas estaban asi, decidimos replantearnos mapa y hacer algo más realista.
Y lo peor de todo, y lo cuento sin animo de drama,es que Hilo empezó con problemas de frio en pies que iban en aumento, hasta que sencillamente me di cuenta que se estaba congelando, que se habia congelado, mejor dicho.
En lineas generales las cosas han sucedido de esta manera, pero hemos luchado sin descanso cada uno de los 16 dias que hemos estado en marcha. Cuando sientes que los has dado todo, te queda al menos la satisfacción de que no podías hacer más.
Personalmente entiendo los viajes polares del siglo XXI desde la óptica de los Noruegos de hoy en dia.
Os acordáis de Scott tirando del trineo y de Amundsen, mucho más práctico, dejándose llevar por los perros? Uno no sabía nada y tiraba porque no encontraba mejor solución (le fallaron los motores, los caballos machuarianos, etc)mientras que el otro estaba tan adaptado al medio que conocia las soluciones más prácticas (venia de vivir 3 años en el artico canadiense con los inuits). Hoy en dia es lo mismo.Arrastrar una tremenda carga cuando se puede aliviar con velas de tracción, no aporta nada.
Viajar por el Artico ha de ser "divertido". Luchar y dejarse la piel si,pero no a lo tonto.
Lo único que puedo decir es que ya estamos pensando en el proximo. Queremos hacer algo largo por Laponia y despues regresar a Svalbard...con perro
Lo importante es llevar muchos kilometros recorridos.
Volveremos a intentarlo.De momento aqui en Cabo Norte sigue nevando y mañana me esperan los esquies y la vela.
