Pyramiden fue fundada en el año 1910 por los suecos. En el 1927 fue vendida a la Unión Soviética pasando luego a Rusia, hasta que fue abandonada en el año 1998. Como muchos lugares de explotación minera la ciudad vivió hasta que los recursos se agotaron o resultaron insuficientes. Las torres y estructuras de extracción carbonífera permanecen perfectamente visibles desde la lejanía. Situada entre una gran montaña de la cual adquiere el nombre y la bahía de Petuniabukta, la ciudad se encuentra a 78º 93´ N a tan solo 620 millas del Polo Norte. Antes de adormecerse la ciudad representaba el modelo social de ciudad soviética. Vivía ajena al resto del planeta, de manera autosuficiente. La comida era gratuita y contaba con un gran invernadero y corrales cubiertos para ganado. Los edificios dedicados a la actividad deportiva continúan en pie y llaman la atención por sus dimensiones desproporcionadas. Una piscina enorme, pública (y cubierta, claro) se encuentra frente a un pabellón que muchos equipos de baloncesto de primera división de nuestro país envidiarían. La ciudad llegó a contar con más de mil habitantes y en su biblioteca, con más de 50000 volúmenes, se encontraban obras de Tolstoj, Pushkin y claro, Sholojov, cuyo Don apacible descansaba en mi pulka mientras recorría la ciudad. En el cine gratuito de Pyramiden todas las noches se proyectaba una película diferente.
La compañía minera Arktikugol Trust declaró el 10 de enero de 1998 que el yacimiento carbonífero no daba para más y la ciudad se “cerraba”. Cuentan que el vuelo de regreso a Rusia se anunció con sólo dos horas de antelación. En primer lugar en el año 96 un avión que traía de vuelta a mineros rusos y ucranianos se estrelló causando la muerte de la totalidad de sus pasajeros (141), un año después en Barentsburg, el único asentamiento ruso en Spitsbergen activo en la actualidad, se produjo una explosión en la mina que causó 23 muertos. Como un niño al que sus padres mandan a la cama castigado antes de la hora, Pyramiden se echó a dormir un año después. La madre Rusia no dejó a sus habitantes ni llevarse sus gatos de vuelta. Ahora merodean por la ciudad aunque estén prohibidos en el resto del archipiélago.
Pero no todo duerme en la ciudad. Un grupo de cinco rusos vive actualmente en el antiguo hotel y se afana en rehabilitarlo poco a poco y adecentar su bar a la espera de la llegada de posibles turistas. A este hotel, o lo que queda de él, nos arrastramos en el 8º día de expedición. Cenamos algo, posamos nuestro equipo sobre los radiadores enormes encendidos en la entrada, y nos echamos a dormir entre botes de pintura, tablones de madera y azulejos de otra época desgastados por el tiempo y por el frío. Envuelto en el calor del edificio y echado sobre un suelo firme, mi cuerpo se apagó y mi cabeza comenzó a viajar liberada por fin de tan pesada carga. Recorrí cabañas en medio de la estepa y palacios suntuosos en San Petersburgo. Me sumergí en un sueño profundo pensando que éramos dos cosacos ateridos de frío que habían encontrado posada en un palacio en plena Primera Guerra Mundial.
