Reduciríamos el peso de nuestras provisiones e intentaríamos llegar hasta Longyearbyen. En definitiva “bajaríamos el listón” de nuestro proyecto. Dos semanas más tarde, en el punto de más altitud de todo nuestro recorrido nos dimos de bruces con la realidad: no llegaríamos a ningún lado con esas condiciones. Además las falanges de mi pie izquierdo habían empezado a teñirse de un negro sospechoso. Tras un rápido cálculo el desenlace era obvio, no había comida para llegar a ningún lugar habitado y el mal tiempo volvió a echarse sobre nosotros. Una llamada con el teléfono satélite dio la vuelta a la tortilla.
El rotor del helicóptero se escuchó sobre nuestras cabezas. El zumbido que te hiela la sangre cuando lo escuchas y sabes que viene a por ti. Después de casi veinte días de mal tiempo, soledad y blancura total en medio del glaciar, el cielo se abrió para depositar a una enorme maquina que con suavidad se posó frente a nosotros y escupió a una serie de individuos que actuaron como en una coreografía cien veces ensayada. El primero de ellos monta guardia mirando a un lado y a otro mientras acaricia el mágnum que cuelga de su cintura. Otro corre hacia nuestras armas colocadas en un lugar visible por indicación previa, las descarga, desmonta y las coloca en el interior del helicóptero en un lugar de preferencia. El tercer individuo corre hacia a mi y por gestos me pregunta si estoy bien. Un poco más al sur el mar se abría ante nosotros con los primeros síntomas de la descongelación. En ese momento noté como se clavaba en mi estomago la espina de un viaje inconcluso. En ese momento supe que volvería, y pronto, a este mismo lugar. Una vez aterrizado el helicóptero el piloto, pantalones de cuero marrones, pistola al cinto, pañuelo enrollado en la cabeza sujetando una melena gris perfectamente peinada (no estoy hablando de un piloto de Vietnam) nos abrazó y con una sonrisa en la cara nos dijo:
