Después de la estancia en Byers volví a la base española Juan Carlos I para pasar en ella las Navidades. Es el periodo llamado interfase y en él, nuestra pequeña base espacial, está tranquila pues los proyectos se reducen y la mayor parte de los científicos vuelven a sus casas. Nosotros aprovechamos esos días para llevar a cabo una idea que flotaba sobre las cabezas del personal de la base desde hace bastante tiempo: Unir por tierra la base y el campamento Byers. Se encuentran cada uno en una punta de la isla y era necesario obtener el track que uniese ambos puntos para un eventual desalojo de la base por tierra o un rescate en ese campamento avanzado.
El viaje daba la posibilidad de recorrer a lo largo la isla Livingston, se trata de un privilegio en estos lugares donde cualquier aproximación o acceso es complicado y la parafernalia que se ha de movilizar es grande en cualquier movimiento. El recorrido lo realizamos en moto de nieve en su mayor parte. Las motos han de ir encordadas cuando se progresa sobre el glaciar (es decir, en todo momento), de esa manera formábamos un extraño convoy de tres motos con un trineo y una pulka unidos todos por una cuerda. Para darle un toque más pintoresco uno de nosotros, pues éramos cuatro, iba sentado en el trineo en una silla acoplada de fabricación casera, una especie de trono que te dejaba helado y que te hacía salir volando a la primera de cambio. La extraña caravana salió de la base el día de Navidad a las 5 de la mañana.
El paso clave y posiblemente única dificultad de la ruta lo encontraríamos en el cruce del collado de Burdick. Esta vez la silueta de la isla se abría frente a nosotros y se distinguían los lugares principales a simple vista desde nuestros asientos. La Isla Maravillosa tiene una variedad de paisajes que asombra. Desde el llano polar por el que avanzábamos se distinguía la Cordillera de los Friesland con las mayores alturas de toda la isla, resultaba una especie de cadena montañosa de los Himalaya cargada como estaba de seracs y con la nieve hciendo malabarismos en sus afiladas aristas para no caer. A ambos lados la costa se dibujaba irregular y se apreciaban las rompientes que forman los arrecifes como guardianes protectores que deciden quien se acerca y quien no a su tierra. Al fondo, frente a nosotros la tierra virgen, libre de hielos y salpicada por numerosos relieves de escasa altitud se encontraba la Península de Byers.
Una bandada de petreles posada sobre la nieve nos indicó el final del terreno nevado. El sitio donde deberíamos aparcar nuestros vehículos y continuar a pie hasta el campamento. Dos horas después entrabamos en el iglú de habitabilidad con gorros de Papa Noel y unos bogavantes envasados al vacío para comerlos con el personal del campamento. Hasta descorchamos una botella de Cava en plan Fernando Alonso que nos bebimos todos juntos antes de emprender el regreso. La vuelta transcurrió sin complicaciones y una luz plateada iluminaba nuestras anteriores pisadas. Unas diecisiete horas después de la salida llegábamos a casa de nuevo.
